How much does Facebook advertising cost for a small business in South Africa?

If you run a small business in East London, you have probably asked this: what does Facebook advertising actually cost? The honest answer is that it depends, but not as much as people make out. Here is how it works, with real numbers.

The short answer

Two costs, not one

Every Facebook ad has two costs, and most people only think about the first.

1. The ad budget. This is what you pay Facebook to show your ad to people. You choose the amount. It can be small or big.
2. The work. Someone has to take or choose good photos, write the words, set up the targeting, check the ads and fix what is not working. You either do this yourself, which costs your time, or you pay someone.

When a business says "Facebook ads did not work for me", it is usually the second part that went wrong, not the budget.

What does one enquiry cost?

This is the number that matters. Not likes, not clicks. How much do you pay each time a real person messages your business on WhatsApp?

From 15 July to 15 October 2026, the ads we ran for our own clients got 1,742 WhatsApp enquiries. Across 96 ad runs, the average cost was R14.90 per enquiry. These are real numbers from real local businesses: pool builders, cleaners, guest houses and more.

Your number will be different. A pool relining job and a couch clean are not the same, and a small town is not the same as a big city. But it gives you a fair idea of what "normal" looks like for local businesses.

What changes the price

• Your area. Showing your ad to people close to you costs less than showing it to the whole province. A pool builder in Gonubie does not need to reach Cape Town.
• Your photos. Real photos of your own work beat stock photos every time. People trust what looks real.
• Your offer. "Free quote this week" works better than "we are the best".
• How easy it is to reply. A WhatsApp button is easier than a contact form.
• How long you give it. One day is not enough to judge anything. Give it a full week.

How to waste money on Facebook ads

• Pressing the blue "Boost post" button on any old post.
• Using stock photos instead of your real work.
• Targeting the whole country when you only work in East London and around it.
• Sending people to a website nobody reads, instead of straight to your WhatsApp.
• Switching the ad off after one day because it "did not work".

How to start small

You do not need a big budget to find out if Facebook works for your business. Run one week, with one clear offer, in one area, with your real photos. Count the WhatsApp messages at the end. If they come in at a price that makes sense for your business, run it again. If not, change one thing and test again.

Three questions to ask before you pay anyone

1. How much of my money goes to Facebook, and how much is your fee?
2. Do you use my own photos?
3. What happens if it does not work?
